Area Experts

For the past few weeks, we have been working on finding the area of a variety of polygons. We started with rectangles, moved onto parallelograms, then to triangles. Now, students have gained all the skills that they need to find the area of ANY polygon. What has been particularly great about this unit is that all students seem to be showing success! I have even heard some mathematicians say that they want to be architects one day because of the work they are doing with area. How amazing is that?
Next week, we will start to discover more about finding the surface area of 3-D objects. Then, by the end of the week we will wrap up this unit with our final assessment.

All students have finally finished reading their book club books and have finished up their final book reviews. Students had the opportunity to create a movie trailer for their book review or create a written book review. My, oh my, did they turn out AMAZING! In each book review, students were to describe the main character, discuss social issues in the book, explain important quotes, and choose a song or hashtag that represents the theme of the book. From all the videos I saw, I could truly say that we have some future actors in the class!

Students have also been eagerly working on their word study words. We have been sorting, spelling, and writing sentences using these words. On Monday, we are having a spelling assessment so please encourage your child to practice!

This week, we had a discussion about the importance of meeting deadlines. There were a few students who turned their book reviews in late, so please continue this discussion about deadlines at home.

We also started switching classes at the end of the day! During the last hour of the day, my class is now in Mx. Spencer's class working on social studies, and Mx. Spencer's class is now in my room working on science. I am so excited about this because it truly prepares students for middle school!
