Creators in Room 407

This week in Literacy, book clubs started wrapping up their books. Clubs are now starting to create a book review so that others can access this review and see what the book is all about. Students are given the option of creating a written book review that will be published in a book of reviews or they may create a movie trailer. In both scenarios, students are the ones reflecting on their books and identifying key details that a person wondering about the book might be interested in knowing. To make this more relevant, students are also creating a hashtag or choosing a song that fits in with the themes or social issues covered in the book. So far, the book reviews are really coming along!

We also recently started reading Refugee by Alan Gratz. This book is going to help us continue our thinking from our social issues unit as we move forward. It is told from the perspective of three kids living in different time periods with a common goal: to seek refuge. Refugee takes us back in time to the 1930s in Nazi Germany, to 1994 in Cuba, and to 2015 in Syria. My goal is to help our students understand the privilege we have as people who live in the USA, all while taking on a new perspective of life as a refugee. This week in Math, students have really been diving in and learning all about finding the area of parallelograms. I am noticing that many students are starting to feel more confident in this unit. Because of this increase in confidence, many students have been volunteering to share and explain the various strategies they used to find the area. I can't wait to see where we go from here!

In Science, students have been working on creating scale models that measure distance in our solar system. On top of this, students have also been working to understand more about how our orbit, axis, and distance from the sun allow us to have 4 seasons. Today the class used hand made visuals to teach me a lesson about the seasons. It was so much fun to see my students take on the role as a teacher for a short while.

Thank you to all of the families that stopped by for open house! It was so great to meet everyone and it is also extra special when your child is able to show you everything they have been doing in school. Many families signed up for parent-teacher conferences, but if you did not get the chance, then I will be in contact so that we can set up a day and time.
