Hallow-Week at JES

This week was busy busy busy! The energy was building all week with anticipation for Halloween. Earlier in the year, a student in our class created a petition to allow festive decorations in the classroom. He got all of his peers to sign and proposed the plan to Mr. Manning. In return, our class got an OK to decorate! To prepare for our Harvest Party, all kids in our class got to create at least one decoration to help us celebrate. This really helped to make each student feel like they were a part in organizing the festivities!

I also wanted to give a HUGE thank you to all families who brought something in for our Harvest Party! The treats were tasty and everyone was thankful :)

Besides these celebrations, students were certainly tasked with plenty of rigorous work! One of my
favorites from this week was our pumpkin stand challenge. Students were tasked with creating the tallest and least expensive pumpkin stand for our "local pumpkin patch." Groups needed to propose a plan, estimate the cost of the materials, visit the "supply store" where they needed to "purchase" materials for their stand, and then create! Students were presented with many challenges: teamwork, purchasing unused materials that increased the cost of their stand, and creating a structure that is both stable and tall. In the end, each group successfully created a pumpkin stand that would hold a pumpkin, but ALL groups found ideas that they could use to improve their structure. This is what engineering is all about!

In math, we wrapped up our area unit. This coming week, we will be beginning our new unit about ratios. Students will be able to define and apply the terms "ratio," "rate," equivalent ratios," "per," "at this rate," "constant speed," and "constant rate." I am so excited to begin!

This week, we started new word study words. I took the average scores from our word study assessment from Monday and found that we scored an average of 93%! This is amazing! I'm hoping to keep that positive momentum going into this next set of words. Additionally, many students requested that they get a copy of their words to take home to study. Because it seemed like a majority wanted this, I am sending home a copy of words to each student. They are not required to practice them outside of school, but it is HIGHLY recommended.

We have also begun thinking about the structure of a 5 paragraph essay. We discussed how each essay begins with an opening paragraph, ends with a closing paragraph, and includes 3 body paragraphs in between. Our big focus this week was on developing a claim/thesis statement. We will continue working on structure this coming week.
