It's All About Choice!

This week the 6th graders finished their one pagers and one sliders. Each student had the chance to share their work with a small group and share all about the book they read over the summer. SO many of their creations had a variety of sketches, sentences, quotes, and meaningful phrases. I know I learned a lot about different books that I might want to read in my free time!

We also started a new literacy unit on Social Issues. One of my philosophies as a teacher is that when students have choice in their every day learning, then their education becomes more meaningful to them. Because of this, I shared a variety of books that fit in well with this unit. Students could choose between The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis, Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, and Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. All students have their books and have had the chance to dive into them independently and by doing partner reads. Our big focus has been on character relationships and how we need to look deeply at the details in the text to tell us what's really going on in these relationships. Next week, students will begin talking about their books in book clubs. I can't wait to see how this goes!

Student Council elections were this past week. We had 3 talented candidates from our class run. The leadership and good-sportsmanship that occurred during our election summed up everything that I hope our class can be this year. Congratulations to our new Student Council representatives!

Johnson Elementary School is a PBIS school, which means that we like to reinforce positive behavior by rewarding students with "jewels." When the class earns enough jewels, then we get to have a celebration. These lucky 6th graders have already met their goal! On Tuesday, September 17, we are going to have an extra recess ice cream social. I will be providing students with the ice cream, bowls, and spoons. If any family members want to send ice cream toppings to school with their child, please feel free. Please no peanut products, though! I'm allergic!

What a FANTASTIC third week of school!
