We Are All Writers

This week the 6th graders began writing about the books they chose to read over the summer. Students were given the challenge of creating one page or one slide of doodles, images, words, and quotes all about the themes, symbols, and characters in their book. It is so great to see how artistic and creative many 6th graders are getting with this assignment! We have also been reading Holes by Louis Sachar during our read aloud time each day.

In math this week, we began our unit on data sets and distributions. Students learned about dot plots and the difference between categorical and numerical data. Each 6th grader also had the chance to be statisticians and collect data about our classmates. They had to problem solve and think of an efficient way to collect and record the data. Students used dot plots, frequency tables, and charts to record their data. I was impressed to see students thinking outside the box!

All week, our class has been going to the Maker Space at the end of the day to learn about the different tools that are in this space. Students explored the Sphero, which is a robotic sphere that can be programmed to change colors and move around. Students also got to try out the Cricut machine, which is used to cut different paper products and is commonly used to cut different sticker designs. The kids were SO engaged and excited to work with their hands.
