End of Trimester 2: New Beginnings

This week, we started a few new routines in room 407. In math, we started a new unit about dividing fractions. So far, we have been discussing division strategies, focusing on using phrases such as "how many groups" and "how many are in each group" to help us understand the meaning of division. Also, we started using math notebooks to encourage students to take notes during class time. Students are motivated and excited to take detailed notes because they get to use this resource on exit tasks and assessments!

We have also switched up our literacy routine a bit. I have implemented a scheduled movement break in the middle of literacy so that students have the chance to recharge their brains. This way, students can bring 100% focus during reading time. I'm so excited to keep teaching new movement breaks after our vacation. Once the breaks have been taught, they will be chosen daily by our "morning meeting director," further promoting student choice in our classroom.

In literacy, we have been focusing on reading for volume. Students are at the points in their books where they just want to keep on reading! Many are wrapping up their books, but a few are still working toward the end. For our break, I have assigned an extra credit assignment where students have the opportunity to create or re-create the ending to their books. This is an opportunity for students to get creative and show quite a bit about their reading comprehension.

We are also just about finished with our read aloud, Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. This was a perfect mentor text to go along with our deep study of character unit. We studied character traits that connect to Max and Kevin by analyzing their actions and forces behind their actions. These characters helped us to understand that there are often 2 sides to characters: one less likable and one more likable. We also studied how characters are shaped by the mood or atmosphere of the setting though this book. Ask your child how they are liking the book!
